Role of Emotion and Choice in Learning (REaCh)

Funding for the REaCh Research Hub supports a variety of activities focusing on the science of child learning, organized within three major components:

1. Research
A major new research project focusing on how neurodevelopmental, conceptual, and emotional factors influence the growing academic skills of young children.

Basic concepts. Early learning of basic concepts supports the development of skills in math and reading.
Emotional valence. Preferences and avoidance may play a role in developing math and reading skills.
Brain development. Developing brain connectivity may play a role in learning of math and reading.

2. Mentoring
A mentoring and training structure involving senior and junior faculty, as well as graduate and undergraduate researchers, in nested mentoring relationships.
A weekly 1.5 hour seminar focusing on the state of science within the areas of:

Child reading and math learning
The role of choice in learning
Brain bases of number and word processing
Social/affective factors in child learning
Clinical and diagnostic issues in learning disorders
Genetic contributions to learning
Teaching, training, and intervention techniques
Brain imaging methods

3. Innovation
Innovative new pilot studies to serve as the basis for future expansion of the REaCh research program into a major NICHD-funded Research Center. Recently funded pilot projects will use multimodal structural and functional imaging methods (e.g., MRI, fMRI, EEG, MEG) to measure the child brain during attention, working memory, reading, and math processing.
